Project Intro – The Who
Some touchscreen parking meters are being installed. There is one for every 6 parking spots. Design a mobile app to work with the touchscreens, so that users can search and pay for a parking spot, and monitor their time and also track their car when done.
Project Details – The Why
Parking spot is crucial issue drivers take into consideration before setting out. Both personal car owners and commercial car owners (Uber and Bolt drivers) speak the same language when it comes down to parking.To help parklot parking spot users solve the problem they are facing, I was asked to design a mobile app to connect with their touchscreen parking meter interface.
The major constraint was a very short timeframe.
I worked on the project from research all to final design presentation.
Objectives – The What
The goal of the project was to create an app that works seamlessly with the already installed touchscreen parking meters to
- Allow users to search and pay for or reserve a parking spot before they leave their home or while they are at the location.
- Allow the app to connect to the touchscreen interface by scanning an auto-generated QR code to register the user’s ticket.
Solution – The Process
Like every project, to understand the goal and plan the client has for the project, I carried out a stakeholder interview, asking questions and listening to their response which helped me understood how parking spot business works.
After the stakeholder interview, I was able to formulate user interview questions.
Defining the Users
The original list of users generated from the stakeholder interview was too broad but after I interviewed the users (patients) I was able to narrow it down and create comprehensive user personas.
To create a useful parking app, I created user stories to guide me in designing the MVP reducing app features to the basic needs of the user.
The Visual and UI Design
Using flows, generated from the user stories, I designed the wireframes for the app, which I used to carry out the user testing. I later learned from the testing, that some of the app functions would have to be restructured to make the app function as required.
The UI Designs
For the visual design, I decided to go with a professional but not too strict colour palette, the font choices show clarity and readability.
Learnings and Key Findings – The Discovery
To make the solution foolproof, I decided to carry out two testings on the UI designs. The result of these testing and reviews helped me re-adjust the screens for the final design.
While the mobile app is being developed by the engineering team, I will suggest to Parklots stakeholders to start preparing their touchscreens parking meter to be equipped with the fastest internet or server facility to make the user experience seamless.
